There is no doubt that the character of “Fatboy” has taken not only viewer but also the show’s producers by surprise, having been taken to the heart of viewers around the world. While the character has already played a central role in the immigration issue with his wife there are many who now believe that “Fatboy” is perhaps one of the best character finds in recent years and should play a more central role in the weeks, months and years ahead.

The beauty of the “Fatboy” character is the fact that not only does he attract the attention of young fans of Eastenders but is also attracting attention of older fans. There are very few characters in any Soap around the world that can have as much impact upon a younger audience as an older audience while maintaining their original character. There is no doubt that the actor who plays “Fatboy” has a lot to do with the success of the character as it seems that many Eastenders fans were literally waiting for a new “role model”.

We should see a number of new characters taking a more central role in Eastenders in the weeks, months and years ahead as some of the “older cast” reduce their input to the show and begin to take a backseat. This transfer period between some of the older characters and some of the newer characters is very difficult to manage and ultimately direction will be given by Eastenders fans who will have no problems coming forward with any grievances.

After a few years in the wilderness many people believe that Eastenders now looks fresher and better positioned for the future than it has been for some time. There have been some very brave and controversial decisions made, characters have come and gone, but at this point in time it seems the directors have got it right. Do you agree?
