Tonight saw an emotional Joe return to the square to unravel one of Eastenders best kept secrets - Who killed Pauline?
After being sent to recover Rebecca’s toy rabbit from Martin’s house, Dot confronts an emotional Joe who has returned to the square. Eager to find out exactly why he has returned, Dot begins to question him and soon realises that he knows more about Pauline’s death than first thought. Joe was the mystery visitor who returned just prior to Pauline’s death!
Dot and Joe relive their past loveless marriages as Joe slowly begins to unravel the mystery of Pauline’s death. After returning to try and make peace with Pauline for one last time, he is confronted by an arrogant loveless Pauline who mocks Joe as a husband, lover and human being.Â
Joe has loving memories of his first wife and confides in Dot that he thought Pauline could replace his true love. Spilling out yet more revelations of his “marriage†to Pauline, Dot realises the true extent of Joe’s emotions and feelings towards Pauline. Haunted by the “ghosts†of Arthur, Pauline’s mother and Mark Fowler, Joe knew that his days were number with Pauline.
Elsewhere on the Square Deano needs to get out of the house as Carly and Kevin fight about Shirley, and the reasons why she is still around. In the Queen Vic, Shirley and Pat cross swords with Pat determined to know what Shirley has on Kevin…..after much drinking and arguing a shocked Pat walks out of the pub - does she know Kevin’s secret?
Over at the Fowler house, Dot continues to chat with Joe who eventually confides that he was the one who hit Pauline, causing the massive brain haemorrhage which killed her off. Worried about Dot’s whereabouts, Jim ventures over only to hear Joe and Dot arguing. When Jim bursts into the room Joe grabs Dot before she can tell Jim what is happening.
A scuffle ensues and Joe goes crashing to his death through the bedroom window. Just prior to Jim’s arrival Dot had rang the Police to let them know what happened, only for Joe to snatch the phone and throw it on the floor - the mobile appeared to be connected to the Police, but did they catch the high drama of Joe’s confession?
